Health Insurance Open Enrollment Explained

It is important to understand what “Open Enrollment” is and when you can take advantage of it. Open Enrollment is a specific time period (November 15th through January 15th each year) to enroll into, make changes to, or cancel the government’s health insurance plan. You will not be able to make changes to your health insurance plan outside of the Open Enrollment period unless you have a “Qualifying Life Event” such as, marriage or having a baby, etc. You can, however, at any time, cancel your individual insurance plan that is not through employer coverage.

It is especially important to know when Open Enrollment is and decide what you want/need when it comes to your health insurance. Speaking with a qualified health insurance agent should be a top priority! You’ll need to understand the benefits of your health insurance plan, your options, and be able to get the most out of your health insurance budget.

If you want a January 1st effective date, the last day to enroll is December 15th. If you enroll after December 15th, you will have to wait till the first of the next month for your insurance to begin. All enrollments end on January 15th.

Do You Qualify for a Government Subsidy?

During the enrollment process, you’ll provide some basic information about how many people live in your house, your household income and where you live. This will allow you to see what levels of health insurance you and your dependents qualify for, what health insurance will cost you or even if you qualify for free health insurance or a government subsidy that will minimize how much your health insurance costs.

I Don’t Want a Subsidy

If you DO NOT qualify or do not want a government subsidy, you can buy an ACA qualified health plan which covers pre-existing conditions, that is not tied to Nevada Health Link. We can enroll you into either plan. You’ll need to call for details.

What Does a Health Insurance Carrier Do?

A health insurance carrier offers plans that cover medical expenses, such as doctor visits, hospital stays, and prescription medications. What Type of Plans Are Offered by Health Insurance Carriers?

Health insurance carriers provide a range of plans to suit diverse needs. Common types include:

    • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): Requires using in-network providers and often a referral from a primary care physician for specialists.

    • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): Allows visits to out-of-network providers, but in-network care is less expensive.

    • Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO): Covers only in-network care, except in emergencies, like an ER (Emergency Room) visit.

    • Point of Service (POS): Blends HMO and PPO features, requiring referrals but allowing out-of-network care at a higher cost.

Each plan offers a balance of cost, flexibility, and coverage, so selecting one depends on your healthcare needs and budget.

    • Network Size: Does the carrier include your preferred doctors or hospitals in its network?

    • Coverage Options: Are essential services, like preventive care or prescription drugs, included?

    • Customer Service: Is support available for questions about claims or coverage?

    • Premium Costs: Can you afford the monthly payments alongside out-of-pocket costs like deductibles?
