Ask Your Current Insurance Agent and Shop Around

Many people mistakenly believe that once they have an auto insurance policy, they’re locked into the policy and their rate until the term is up. Fortunately, that’s not true. You can make changes to your auto insurance policy, including increasing or decreasing coverage and adding discounts that you’re eligible for at any time. Your auto insurance agent can help you review your other insurance policies to see how your policies can be used to receive a discount.

How Much Can I Save?

Most insurers offer a variety of discounts that can help you save money on your monthly insurance premium. Most drivers know that if they insure two cars under one auto insurance policy, they’ll pay less on that one policy than they would on two separate policies. However, many drivers overlook other opportunities to save money. On average, drivers can expect to save between 10 and 25 percent off their liability, comprehensive, and collision coverages. This discount is available on plans with two or more cars called a “multicar” or “multi-unit” discount, when they are combined onto the same policy.

Making Sense of Multi-Auto Discounts

Of all the discounts that are available for auto insurance, multi-auto, also called multi-car, discounts are the easiest to get. In fact, it’s usually automatically applied when you add a new vehicle to your policy or when you sign up for a new auto insurance policy.

How to Qualify For This Auto Insurance Discount

To qualify for a multi-auto discount, you simply have to have two or more vehicles insured by the same auto insurance company. Additionally, all the drivers who are listed on the policy need to be part of the same household. Some insurers require that policyholders are related to one another. Other auto insurance companies only require that you’re living under the same roof, meaning that your significant other or roommate could also be on the policy.

Imagine that you have one vehicle insured, if your household acquires another vehicle, rather than taking the time to shop around to find the cheapest insurance, simply add it to your policy. You’ll get a discount not just for the new vehicle, but for your old one as well. Nice, right?

If you’re adding a vehicle to an existing policy or signing up for a new policy, you’ll need to provide information like the year, make, and model of your vehicles, their VINs, and your lienholder’s information, if applicable.

Auto & Home: Multi-Policy Discounts

Among the most popular discounts is the multi-policy discount, which you can get simply by having multiple lines of insurance with the same provider. Bundling all your insurance policies with one insurance provider is generally the fastest and easiest way to cut down on what you pay for coverage. Sure, you could shop around for each individual policy and sign up with multiple insurers, but in most cases, it’s hard to beat the multi-policy discount. Additionally, it’s much easier to track your bills when you’re only worrying about a single monthly payment and due date rather than three or four payments and due dates.

After all, you need insurance on your home, vehicle, boat, motorcycle, RV, ATV, and your life anyway, so why not get it all through one provider and save some money? If you have separate policies for each of these, then you are probably paying too much for your coverage.

By working with a single insurer for all your coverage needs, you can ensure you’re getting the best deal possible that they offer, provided your agent is getting you all the discounts you are entitled to.

Additional Auto Insurance Discounts

The auto insurance discounts below (and possibly more) may be available to you. Speak with your auto insurance agent to see what discounts your insurance company offers.

Safe Driver Discount:

If you have no tickets or accidents, you may be eligible for this discount. But, unless you have accident forgiveness, one mess up and you will probably lose that discount.

Shared Family Car:

If you have more drivers than insured cars and are sharing a family car, you may be eligible for this discount.

Good Student or Distant Student:

A good student that gets good grades may be eligible for a discount. College students that are away from home certain distances, for example over 100 miles from home and without access to their cars left at home, may be eligible for discounts.

Good Payer / On-Time Payer:

If you pay your insurance on time you may qualify for a discount. Obviously, it’s important to keep the payments on time to keep this discount.

E-Policy:

If you agree to electronically sign your documents, you may qualify for this discount.

Clean Your Driving Record to Save on Auto Insurance:

If you have a less-than-stellar driving history, then you can expect to pay more, sometimes significantly more, on monthly auto insurance premiums than a driver who has a clean record. This is because auto insurance companies use past driving behavior to predict future behavior and determine how much of a risk you are to insure. While in many cases you simply have to let some time pass for infractions to fall off your record, there may be a few things you can do now to lower your rate.

Address Issues Quickly:

If you’ve gotten pulled over for a broken tail light or because you forgot to renew your vehicle registration, then you may have received a traffic violation called a “fix-it ticket.” In most cases, these violations have a deadline attached. If you pay the fee or fine and show the court that you corrected the problem, then your case will be dismissed. As long as you take care of these “fix-it tickets” quickly, then they won’t go on your driving record. However, if you don’t take care of them in a timely manner, then they will likely end up on your record and drive up your monthly premium.

Take a Driver’s Safety Course:

Many auto insurance companies provide an incentive for taking a defensive driving course in the form of a discount on your monthly premium. In some cases, attending traffic school may allow you to keep infractions that are moving violations off your record. However, it’s important to ensure that the safety course you take is approved by local motor vehicles department.

Contest Tickets:

If you received a ticket when you were speeding due to extenuating circumstances, then you may consider contesting the ticket. Explaining to a judge the reasonable context behind your ticket, such as a medical emergency, may be enough for your ticket fine to be reduced or for the infraction to be removed altogether. This can prevent the ticket from going on your record and may end up being the difference between an affordable auto insurance rate and a high one.

Build Good Driving Habits:

While your driving record may not be perfect, if it’s been a long time since your last infraction, then you may be able to have driving point violations removed from your record. Your local DMV can help you determine whether this may be an option for you.

Work On Getting a Higher Credit Score:

Drivers with higher credit scores generally get lower insurance premiums.

Run Auto Insurance Quotes Under Both Spouses Names:

Believe it or not, running quotes under both spouses names may net a lower rate under one of the spouses.

Don’t Always Go With State Minimum Coverage:

If you always insure your vehicles for State Minimum (Currently 25/50/20), that is considered a higher risk to insurance companies. If you carry higher limits (ex: 250/500/100), you are considered a lower risk. Lower risks get better rates.
